Fiction Essay Based on Love Story by Taylor Swift

Ashley Liebherr
Period: A

            Dear Julie,
You looked beautiful last night at that party. Under all the lights that gown was sparkling. I knew I shouldn’t approach you to say more than hello; your father really hates me doesn’t he? It’s a good thing it was a masquerade ball, he had no idea who I was. Throw one again soon I would love to see you.
                                                                        ~Ronald

            My dearest Ronald,
Yes, last night was amazing, I had a wonderful time and I hope you did too. My father has no idea that it was you, he was actually happy thinking I had finally moved on. Was that you at my window last night? I was too scared to look in fear it might be my father testing me… If it was, come back tonight, we can sneak out to the garden away from everyone! I will see you tonight.
                                                                        -Julie
       Julie,
Last night was disastrous! I cannot believe what he did! He should not have dragged you away from me! I will be back I promise you I will be back! Why does he hate me so much why won’t he just let you be happy! I hated seeing you like that. Alone and crying, you don’t deserve to be treated that way. I understand that you have responsibilities but they can’t do this! Get back to me soon my love.
~Ronald

Ronald,
I am sorry for the scene we caused, I should not have begged you to stay when I knew you could not; it was very stupid of me to think we could hide anything from my father. He is trying to protect me he thinks I am young and stupid but I know how I feel and I know that I would so anything to be with you. So let’s run. Get away from everything, parents, friends, responsibilities, all I need is you and I will be fine. We can come back if we want to let’s just…escape this town for a while see if we are happier without them. I’ll be waiting, all there’s left to do is run.
                                                            -Julie

            Julie,
I will meet you at midnight tomorrow, pack your things, I will see you soon.
                                                            ~Ronald

            Ronald,
You have not written and I am worried… if you don’t like my idea you can tell me but I need to know my dad is trying to set me up with some prince from India! If we are leaving it needs to be now!
                                                            -Julie

Julie,
I have written to you so many times why haven’t you gotten them! I need to talk to you. If I don’t hear from you in a week you will hear from me in person. This I swear to you
-Ronald
            Ronald,
Is everything alright? I heard everything last night. All of the fighting. My father awoke me after midnight to tell me you had come and gone. He seemed conflicted, confused almost. He was reluctant to leave me alone despite the late hour. What happened Ronald, what did he do to you?

                                                -Julie
            Julie,
I went to your house to find out what happened to you. You haven’t been writing to me and I was worried something happened. I ran into your father, literally he was outside and I ran into him. Ha ha. He said he knew that I would be coming. He took our letters Julie, he hid them from you. I wrote to you and you to me and none were delivered, they were stolen by your father! So we screamed and we yelled and I said to him, I wish to be with your daughter. I wasn’t to marry her and I would like to have your blessing. I don’t know why you hate me so much, I do know I have made many mistakes but I will never make them again. He gave me your mothers ring. I will meet you tonight and it will finally be official. We have his approval and we can finally be together. I will see you at nine tonight my love.

                                                -Ronald
            Ronald,
You must be joking! My father would never agree to let me marry you! I don’t believe you. But I will see you tonight.
                                                -Julie
            Ronald,
I am so sorry I doubted you! My father came upstairs and said to me everything that happened last night! He told me he gave you my mother’s ring! The gorgeous diamond from her wedding to my father! She wore it up until the day she passed away. He also offered to let me wear her wedding dress! I swear this is all a dream! When shall the wedding be? Who will we invite oh Ronald I cannot wait! I will see you tonight. I am so happy that we won’t have to write letters anymore I will get to see you every day! I cannot wait! Goodbye for now.

                                    -Forever Yours, Julie

Little Green Analysis

Shifting between a regretful and hopeful tome throughout the song, “Little Green”, Joni Mitchell introduces naturalistic imagery, descriptive similes, and varied point of view to discuss the loss and adoption of her daughter whom she wants to “have a happy ending”

Throughout the song “Little Green”, the point of view shifts repeatedly between second and third person. One example of this is “Choose her a name she will answer to” She is talking about herself naming her daughter. Also, “There’ll be icicles and birthday clothes,” is telling her daughter what her life will be like. Last, she talks about the father, “He sends you a poem” This is from the father’s point of view because he still doesn’t come back. The point of view shifts repeatedly through the song.

In the song, other than varied point of view there are also descriptive similes. The first example of this is her comparing little green to the color of spring, “Just a little green/ Like the color when spring is born” this means her daughter is bringing her happiness. Next, she compares her little green to something beautiful, “Just a little green/ Like the nights when the Northern Lights perform” The Northern Lights are beautiful and unique so this is a compliment to her newborn daughter who she will soon be losing. The descriptive similes in this song are extremely prominent.
There are many poetic devices in this song, including descriptive similes and varied point of view, but perhaps the most important is the naturalistic imagery. One example of this is when the speaker is talking about a nameless character referred to as “He”. The speaker says, “He went to California/ Hearing everything was warmer there” You can imagine the warmth of this state as you read about it. Also, there is imagery

Popular Music as a Reflection of Culture

Shifting between genres, today’s top songs have common themes, the artists of the top songs utilize themes of good and bad relationships, love and painful heart ache. The three songs that I will take examples from are “We are Never Ever Getting Back Together” by Taylor Swift, “As Long As You Love Me” by Justin Bieber, and “Blow Me(One Last Kiss)” by P!nk.  The point of view is usually the singers’ perspective. The subject of the Taylor Swift song is that she was in a relationship that was on and off for a period of time and she loved the person the song is about, but she is going through heart ache and  she is stating that it is over for good. The line “We are never ever ever getting back together” is used as repetition. There is also alliteration, as shown in the line, “this time I'm telling you, I'm telling you” the “t” is repeated making this alliteration. The subject of the Justin Bieber song is that he loves someone who he wants to always love him. The song can be interpreted in a few different ways, one way would be that he wrote it about his girlfriend, Selena Gomez, and another is that he wrote it about his fans. He uses personification in this song as well as many metaphors. An example of personification would be the following, “smile on your face even though your heart is frowning/ But hey now, you know girl,/ We both know it's a cruel world”  Hearts cannot frown and worlds cannot be cruel. An example of a metaphor would be, “As long as you love me/ I'll be your platinum, I'll be your silver, I'll be your gold” He can’t actually become these things but he is saying he will. Last the P!nk song is about the bitterness of a break up. She is feeling heart ache and mad at the person that the song is about and is using the song as a way to take out her frustrations. The line, “I've been dying over you” is a hyperbole because if she had died over something like this she would not have been alive to write or sing this song. An example of personification is, “My head is spinning so (blow me one last kiss)” This is a commonly used phase meaning that you cannot get your thoughts together and are confused, heads cannot actually spin. These songs show that Americans enjoy upbeat music that they can relate their everyday lives to, everyone has relationships at some point in their lives and everyone gets their heart broken at sometime. Most of the popular songs of this generation are popular for being upbeat and relatable. In my opinion these songs are popular with my generation because music cheers people up, if you get depressed you listen to your favorite songs and they might be able to cheer you up. When it comes to music I don’t think that gender roles are very important because most people don’t say I like this song because the singer is a girl and I don’t like listening to male singers. I think that people base their opinions of music of lyrics and sound more than gender, although boy bands tend to sell more music when they are more attractive. Success is measured in music by the amount of people paying to listen to your music, if your song is the most downloaded on iTunes then you are usually very successful and if you have a lot of songs that hit number one than you are more successful for every song/ album. The three songs have a lot in common with all popular music of this generation.

Theme-Genre Declaration

The theme-genre that I am doing is love and loss in twenty-first century music. I choose this theme-genre because I listen to a lot of different genres but it is all from the twenty-first century. Most of the music is about either love, or losing love. Another reason why I choose this is because I grew up listening to a lot of different genres. My dad always listened to oldies rock and roll when I was younger and my mom listened to pop music, as I grew up both of those were incorporated into the type of music I listen to today. My music taste stretches from pop music to rap music to rock music. One commonality between every music genre is that there are songs about love and loss, and that is something i want to explore throughout this year.
